What you get

The same opening, with a door that behaves like new

Garage door replacement in Scottsdale is a swap inside an opening that already exists. The old door comes out, the frame and the track get checked, and a new door goes on with springs wound for its weight. The opening stays where it is, which is what separates a replacement from an installation, where the opening itself is new or being changed. On a straight frame and a healthy opener, the track and the machine can stay put and the job can stay small.

  • The old door out and gone, with the frame checked before the new one goes on.
  • Track, rollers and hinges renewed where worn, and reused where they are sound.
  • Springs wound for the weight of the new door, not the door that just left.
  • The opener checked against the new door before it is asked to lift it.
  • A panel swap priced first, so you know the cheaper answer before you commit.

Signs

6 signs it is time for a new door

  • Rust along the bottom edge

Rust there can have eaten the seam from the inside, and paint over thin metal may not hold a season.

  • A door repaired twice in 2 years

That is a pattern, and each call can be money a new door would have covered.

  • 2 or more damaged panels

2 sections priced and fitted walk toward a new door, and the rest is still the age it was.

  • A bent end stile

The end stile holds the sections in line, and a bend can put the door out of square where a hinge adjustment may not hold.

  • A panel that cannot be matched

A discontinued profile may not be orderable, so a damaged section can stay damaged and the door may never line up again.

  • A door that is too heavy for the opener

If the door has to be helped up, or the opener strains and quits, the springs are no longer carrying their share.

3 steps

How it works

  1. Tell us the door size, the material and what it is doing, by phone or the form

  2. Someone from our team calls you back and goes over the door types, the ranges and what the swap involves

  3. The old door and its hardware are measured and the frame checked, so the new door is ordered to the opening that is there, with a day set to take the old one out

The door is most of the bill. A single steel door sits at the bottom of the installed range, a double adds to it, and composite or glass goes higher. Removal and labor are the smaller lines, and Angi notes that many companies fold them into one price. The cost page carries the full set with a source beside every row.

Good to know

Door types for a Scottsdale garage

Steel sectional. The most common door material (HomeGuide) and among the least expensive (Angi). Stamped raised panel or carriage look, in 1, 2 or 3 layers, with panels that can be swapped later.

Aluminum full-view glass. A light frame around tempered glass, which HomeGuide calls best for contemporary homes. Aluminum is listed as lightweight, so the springs are matched to the door that is ordered, not the one that left.

Wood and composite. Wood is custom and heavy and needs regular maintenance, while composite mimics wood with less maintenance (HomeGuide). A heavy door counts twice on a swap: it sets the springs and it tests the opener.

Carriage house. Decorative hardware over a steel back, with the hardware as a separate part that changes on its own.

Insulated against uninsulated. An insulated door has an R-value on the label, on a scale Angi gives as 0 to 20, and it can help keep a west facing garage cooler.

Sizes. Angi lists a one car door at 7 to 10 feet wide and 7 to 8 feet high, and doubles are commonly 16 feet wide, with custom widths above that. A swap is ordered to the opening already there.

Panels and doors

Repair or replace?

A panel swap tends to beat a new door under 1 set of conditions: the model is still made, 1 panel is damaged and the frame is straight. Outside that, the arithmetic moves. A new door wins on a discontinued profile, on 2 or more damaged panels, on a bent end stile and on rust along the bottom edge. None of those is cosmetic, and parts do not always fix them. Price the panel first anyway, because knowing what the repair costs turns a new door into a decision.

Good to know

What the old door takes with it when it goes

An old door does not leave alone. Its springs were wound for its weight, so a door of a different weight needs different springs. The track has carried that door its whole life, and a worn track shows as a door that binds at 1 height, so it often goes with the door. A straight track can be reused, and a badly bent one often cannot. Rollers, hinges and the bottom seal are cheap parts that come off with the door anyway. The opener is the last question, because it was sized for the old door and a heavier or taller one can be past what it will lift. What is being reused moves the price, so it is settled before the order.

Tracks and cables

Same size, same track, smaller job

A like for like swap is the cheaper version: same width, same height, same material, with the track left in place and the opener kept if it is healthy. The door is ordered to the opening that exists, and the work is the old door out and the new one on. Change the size or the material and the job changes with it. A wider door needs springs wound for more weight, a taller door can need a different track radius, and a heavier material puts the opener on the list. The opening may need work at the jambs or the header. That is a reason to price the change before the door is ordered, not a reason to avoid it.

5 questions

What people ask us

Still have a question? Call (747) 243-2089 and say what the door is doing.

Is a panel swap cheaper than a new door?

Yes when the model is still made, 1 panel is damaged and the frame is straight. Published panel ranges run $300 to $900 (HomeGuide, Oct 2026) and $250 to $1,000 (Angi, 2026 data) per panel, so 2 panels plus labor walks toward a new door. Price the panel first.

Can the track and opener stay?

On a like for like swap, often. The track is reused when it is straight and the door runs without binding, and the opener stays when it is healthy and built for the weight of the new door. A size or material change is where both come into question, so both ratings get compared.

Will the new door match the house?

A factory color is consistent, but paint on the stucco and trim has had years of Arizona sun, so a new door can read a shade brighter next to it. A sample or a photo in daylight settles it before the order. On a wood door, the stain match is the harder part.

Does a replacement need an architectural review?

If your community has one, often, and the door is a common thing for it to review. A color change or a full-view glass door is where boards often push back. Send the spec and the color to the board before the order goes in, because approval after the door lands leaves it in a crate.

What happens to the old door?

It comes out as part of the job. HomeGuide publishes removal at $50 to $250 as its own line (Oct 2026), and Angi notes that many companies haul the old door away at no extra charge.
